Microsoft to Auto-Install 365 Copilot App on Windows Devices Starting October 2025

Microsoft is gearing up to make its AI-powered assistant more accessible. Starting October 2025, the company will automatically install the Microsoft 365 Copilot app on Windows devices that already have Microsoft 365 desktop apps like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

The rollout, which will be completed by mid-November, will apply to devices outside the European Economic Area (EEA).

What the Copilot App Does

The Microsoft 365 Copilot app acts as a central hub for AI-powered features across Microsoft’s productivity suite. It integrates directly with apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Notebooks, while also providing access to Copilot agents designed to enhance workflow and boost productivity.

According to Microsoft, the change is aimed at simplifying access:

“This app provides a centralized entry point for accessing Copilot experiences and AI-powered capabilities across Microsoft 365. This change ensures users can easily discover and engage with productivity-enhancing features.”

Admins Advised to Prepare

Microsoft has advised IT administrators to inform helpdesk teams and end users in advance to avoid confusion when the app appears automatically on devices. The new app icon will be visible in the Windows Start Menu and enabled by default.

Admins who prefer not to deploy the app can opt out via the Microsoft 365 Apps Admin Center:

  1. Sign in with an admin account.

  2. Navigate to Customization > Device Configuration > Modern App Settings.

  3. Select Microsoft 365 Copilot app.

  4. Uncheck Enable automatic installation of Microsoft 365 Copilot app.

Microsoft also noted that in some cases, the app may already be present on devices, meaning users may notice no visible change beyond the new Start Menu icon.

Recent Moves to Expand Copilot Access

The forced rollout follows Microsoft’s broader push to embed Copilot across its ecosystem:

  • Late September 2025: Microsoft began integrating Copilot agents into the Edge sidebar, allowing users to access AI features directly in the browser.

  • Earlier this year: A new setting allowed admins to pin the Copilot app to the Windows taskbar for easier access.

With this latest move, Microsoft is positioning Copilot as a default productivity companion for millions of Windows users worldwide.
