Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Arrives |
In 2024, Qualcomm launched the Snapdragon 8 Elite, the successor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Promising massive performance gains, the company introduced the “Elite” tag to highlight its most powerful SoC. Many expected its successor to be called the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2. However, just before the 2025 Snapdragon Summit, Qualcomm confirmed that the upcoming flagship chip will instead be known as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.
Why “Gen 5”?
On its official website, Qualcomm explained the decision, clarifying that the “Gen 5” label reflects the fifth generation of 8-series chips since the company introduced its simplified single-digit naming scheme in 2021.
-
Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 debuted in November 2021
-
Since then, each new flagship chip has carried forward the sequence
-
“Elite” remains reserved for Qualcomm’s most industry-leading processors
The company stressed that this does not mean it has skipped three generations; rather, the Elite Gen 5 name signals continuity and progress.
What’s Next for Snapdragon Chips?
Qualcomm confirmed that other Snapdragon processors will also adopt the Gen 5 naming structure, aligning the lineup under one consistent branding identity.
First Phone with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5
As with every new Snapdragon release, the race is on to be the first smartphone brand to launch with the flagship chip. This year, it looks like Xiaomi will take the crown.
The Chinese tech giant has confirmed that its upcoming Xiaomi 17 series—which includes the 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max—will debut the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. The naming is no coincidence; Xiaomi appears set to challenge Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 series directly.
The Xiaomi 17 lineup is expected to launch by the end of this month, giving consumers the first real-world glimpse of Qualcomm’s latest powerhouse chip.
